It has been said that the only thing constant is change. For Janet Washburn, it was a change that brought her to UV&S 25 years ago this month – and the change hasn’t stopped since.
When UV&S purchased Micro Security, a micrographics service company in 1987, one of the benefits of the purchase was adding Jan to the team. Her change in employer led to a new role in the accounting department. Since that time, Jan’s responsibilities have evolved to include payroll, accounts payable as well as numerous other financial jobs for the company.
Her favorite job, however, may have been serving as the banker for a Deal or No Deal game at a Christmas party and the fun that came from missed connections to the host – UV&S president Lee Spence, donning a Howie Mandel inspired bald wig. The less than ideal call quality, and perhaps the shiny head of the host, led to a lot of confusion – and laughs. Let’s just say, telephone technology has changed as well in the past few years.
While her biggest enjoyment comes from her grandkids, and the rare moments when she can escape on her motorcycle, she still loves working at UV&S even after 25 years.
I have watched this company grow over the years and seen a lot of people come and go, but it has been an amazing experience. I can’t wait to see what is next.
How much have things changed in the past 25 years? The original DOS 32 system Jan started with is now on display in the Underground Salt Museum as a monument to changing technology. For Jan, that change is the only thing constant.
